Economy

Halifax’s has a diverse economy with several key sectors contributing to its economic activity. Whilst also benefiting from the strength of the nearby cities Leeds and Manchester with economies worth more than £150bn, bringing an ample supply of jobs within easy reach of the town. Halifax proudly hosts a range of market-leading companies, including Nestle, McVities, Lloyds Bank, as well as the prospering textile houses and numerous engineering firms.   • Finance and banking, Halifax is known for its historical association with the banking sector and it has significant presence of financial institutions.
  • There is also a strong SME appeal in the town, which is vastly facilitated by the Northgate Development and the Dean Clough Business Centre where 150 companies are based.
  • Halifax has a history of manufacturing, including the production of textiles, machinery, and further industrial goods.
  • Halifax also has a vibrant retail sector with numerous shops, shopping centres, and local businesses.

EDUCATION

Halifax has access to plenty of schools nearby, in particular North Halifax Grammar School and the Notable University Centre Calderale College offering a range of subject areas across different levels.

 

REGENERATION

The number of regeneration projects bringing high levels of capital injection is one of the primary incentives to invest in Halifax and surrounding nearby areas. Some of the key statistics here:

  • A new train station at Elland, with an expected 250,000 passengers using the station every year.
  • A £17.7 million redevelopment of Halifax bus station.
  • £120m improvement to the A629, which runs from Halifax to Huddersfield. It estimates that the scheme will create over 1,700 jobs by 2026.
  • A new £60 million mixed-use development at Crosslee Park, which is expected to create 140 FTE jobs during its 4-year construction and more than 200 jobs per annum thereafter.
  • An Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Zone at Clifton, with development land for investors and the potential to generate up to 1,300 new jobs.
  • The redevelopment of the Northgate site, which includes new retail and commercial space, plus the new Trinity Sixth Form Academy, which opened in September 2020. Local media report that the work is expected to see city-centre footfall increasing by 1,500 people per day.
  • Halifax is also benefiting from the ‘Think You Know Halifax’ project to rejuvenate the town centre which will see £200 Million Invested.

The town centre has already witnessed some transformative schemes. Examples include:

  • £35 million invested in Broad Street Plaza, phase 1
  • Construction of the £9 million New Central Library
  • £40 million committed to improvements to Halifax railway station
